HARMAN Phoenix 125 120 Colour Film

HARMAN Phoenix 125 brings the bold, experimental personality of the original Phoenix colour emulsion to 120 medium format. Its revised ISO 125 rating reflects how photographers found the original film performed at its best, while retaining the high contrast, strong visible grain and vibrant colours that give Phoenix its unmistakably analogue appearance.

The Perfect Film For

  • Creative medium-format photography
  • Experimental portraits and fashion images
  • Street, travel and everyday photography
  • Photographers who enjoy visible grain and bold colour
  • Shooting outdoors in good, consistent light

Key Features

  • Experimental 120 colour negative film
  • ISO 125/22° sensitivity
  • High contrast and strong visible grain
  • Punchy, vibrant colour reproduction
  • Potential for halation around bright light sources
  • Best practical results between EI 100 and 160
  • Standard C-41 and CN16 processing
  • 0.125mm / 5-mil acetate film base
  • Edge numbered from 1 to 19
  • No conventional orange masking dyes

Bold Medium-Format Character

Phoenix 125 produces a look that differs noticeably from conventional colour negative films. Its high contrast, pronounced grain and unusual colour response create distinctive photographs, while limited anti-halation protection allows bright lights and reflections to produce striking halation. Occasional coating anomalies can add further character to the finished image.

Exposure and Scanning

HARMAN recommends using Phoenix 125 in good, consistent light and metering for the mid-tones to retain useful shadow and highlight detail. Accurate exposure is particularly important in bright or high-contrast scenes, and exposure bracketing may be helpful when shooting the film for the first time.

The negatives do not have a conventional orange mask, so colour and contrast can change according to the scanner and settings used. Adjusting standard scanning parameters or scanning as reversal film before digitally inverting the result can produce more controlled images. Push processing is not recommended.

TFC's Verdict

A creative choice for medium-format photographers who want something less predictable than a conventional colour film. Phoenix 125 combines the larger 120 format with strong grain, vibrant colour, high contrast and occasional halation for images with a distinctive experimental identity.
