Ilford Pan F Plus 50 is an exceptionally fine-grained, slow-speed panchromatic black and white film designed for photographers seeking outstanding detail, smooth tonality, and excellent image quality. In this 4x5" sheet film format, its ISO 50 sensitivity, fine grain, and high resolving power make it particularly well suited to landscape, architecture, still life, and fine art photography where maximum detail and large, beautifully controlled prints are the priority.
Pan F Plus is known for its extremely fine grain and excellent ability to reproduce intricate detail. Combined with the naturally large imaging area of 4x5" sheet film, it is an excellent choice when image quality is the overriding priority, whether you're producing substantial darkroom enlargements or making detailed high-resolution scans.
Unlike Ilford's Delta films, Pan F Plus uses a traditional conventional-grain emulsion. It delivers a classic black and white appearance with smooth tonal transitions, high edge contrast, and beautifully controlled detail, making it particularly appealing for fine art photography.
With a nominal sensitivity of ISO 50/18°, Pan F Plus is at its best when there is plenty of available light or when working in a controlled studio environment. Its slower speed also makes it useful when longer exposure times or wider apertures are desirable for creative effect.
Alongside its exceptionally fine grain, Pan F Plus offers a broad tonal range that can reproduce subtle transitions from highlights through midtones and into shadows. This combination of tonality, sharpness, and detail makes it particularly rewarding for landscapes, architecture, still life, and carefully considered fine art images.
Pan F Plus has a nominal ISO 50 sensitivity when processed in standard black and white chemistry. It can also be developed to higher contrast levels for specialist technical and scientific applications where greater separation between tones is required.
Ilford recommends developing Pan F Plus promptly after exposure, as its latent image is not as stable over extended periods as some other Ilford films. For the most consistent results, avoid leaving exposed sheets undeveloped for unnecessarily long periods.
Pan F Plus is an obvious match for 4x5" photography when outright image quality matters more than speed. Its exceptionally fine grain, excellent detail rendition, crisp edge definition, and broad tonal range play beautifully to the strengths of large format. For landscapes, architecture, still life, and fine art work where you have enough light or the luxury of a tripod, it's a superb film for creating detailed negatives capable of producing seriously impressive prints.
