The Paterson Deluxe Film Processing Starter Kit contains the essential equipment and chemistry you need to start developing black and white film at home. Created by two of the biggest names in analogue photography, Paterson and Ilford, the kit combines a two-reel Universal Developing Tank with measuring graduates, thermometer, film clips, cassette opener, and pre-measured Ilford Simplicity chemistry. It's an excellent all-in-one starting point for developing both 35mm and 120 film.
This kit brings together the essential tools required for processing black and white film, removing much of the guesswork involved in assembling your first darkroom setup. Once your film has been loaded onto the reel and placed inside the light-tight developing tank, the remaining processing stages can be completed in normal room light.
At the heart of the kit is Paterson's popular Super System 4 Universal Developing Tank. Its two adjustable Auto Load Reels allow you to process two rolls of 35mm film simultaneously or a single roll of 120/220 film. The light-tight funnel design allows chemistry to be poured in and out quickly, while the tank supports both inversion and rotary agitation methods.
The included Ilford Simplicity Film Starter Pack provides pre-measured portions of the chemistry required to process your first films. It includes Ilfosol 3 developer, Ilfostop stop bath, Rapid Fixer, and Ilfotol wetting agent, making it an especially straightforward introduction to black and white processing.
Three 600ml Paterson graduates provide plenty of capacity for preparing your working solutions, with clear graduations for accurate measurement. The included Paterson thermometer helps you monitor processing temperature, while the chemical stirrer makes it easy to thoroughly mix liquid concentrates or powdered chemistry.
An Ilford cassette opener makes it easier to remove 35mm film from its cartridge before loading it onto a reel. Once processing is complete, the four Paterson film clips provide two pairs for hanging your films to dry, with weighted clips helping keep the film straight.
Film must be loaded onto the developing reel in complete darkness. You'll therefore need access to a suitably light-tight room or a changing bag, which is not included with the kit. Once the film is correctly loaded and the developing tank is closed, the processing itself can be carried out in normal room light.
If you're starting to develop your own black and white film, this is a much easier route than buying every piece of equipment separately. Paterson's tank and reels are proven darkroom staples that you'll continue using long after the supplied chemistry is finished, while Ilford's pre-measured Simplicity chemicals make those first few films far less intimidating.
